Summer Learning Journey - Day 4 - Activity 1 - Recommending A Book...

Hi, reader, I'm quite excited...

For Day 4 on the Summer Learning Journey, it said:

It’s the big day! You’re about to hop on an airplane and travel to a new country. Curious Kiwi will keep you company on the journey. Unfortunately, Curious Kiwi forgot his book and he is worried that he’ll get bored on the long flight without anything to read. He needs your help…

Then I read the activity...

Think about all of the books that you have read over the past year. Which one was your favourite?  On your blog list the title and author of the book and then provide a short description of it. What is the book about?

Okay...here we go...what is a book that I had read over the past year? This book must have been the best book I've read in QUITE a while...most importantly, it's based on true events...the Christchurch Earthquakes...

Image result for canterbury quake bookCanterbury Quake, by Desna Wallace, part of the My New Zealand Story series by Scholastic NZ, featuring books written by different authors in perspectives of different kids/teens in different historical events. This book focuses on an 11-year-old girl named Maddy, who is just a girl who wants a phone for her birthday. Living in Christchurch with her parents and siblings, everything just seemed normal for her. Then the earthquake struck...it was the moment that changed her life forever...

Maddy, throughout the book, provides detailed diary entries about her life after the first big quake, followed by the 2012 earthquake in February. From her insightful diary entries through her experience in Christchurch shows the earthquake's and the aftershock's effects on Maddy's friendships, family, and daily life.

I recommend it highly for Curious Kiwi.

And that was the task. Gosh, that brought back so much memories...

  1. Hi Willy,

I am so appreciative of the time and effort that you put into your post. The book that you recommended for Curious Kiwi ('Canterbury Quake') sounds like it was very well written and very engaging. I am definitely going to seek it out and read it. I was actually sitting right in front of the Christchurch cathedral at 1:11 pm the day before the second major quake hit and I am very aware of how close our family came to being personally affected by the tragedy. It is incredible to think that it was almost three years ago now. Where did the time go?!

I hope that you and your family were not directly affected by the quake and that you are all enjoying a safe and happy start to 2016. I'll look forward to blogging with you again very soon!

    Safe travels to Germany,

    Rachel
